Update on the Badges

Howdy people! In case you don’t follow us on Twitter, or have missed our updates, we’re here with some information about what happened to your badges.

Throughout Day One of the event, our website became overwhelmed by the number of users and started FREAKING OUT. We had tested it before the event, and everything was going smoothly, but as more and more people started signing up (and commenting in the forums, and getting badges, etc.) it became overloaded and started crashing. We received dozens of emails from people who couldn’t even get into the website, or who had the website crashing every time they did anything, or who weren’t able to get badges.

After much deliberation and extensive discussions with our web developer, the best solution we currently have is to disable the badges.

Obviously this is a huge disappointment, for us more than anyone else, as the badges were one of the most exciting additions to the event this year. Disabling them was our best solution for the time being, as they were the cause of many of the issues we were experiencing. However, we are still troubleshooting different ways to bring the badges back in a way that won’t overload the website. On the plus side, the site is running much more quickly than it was yesterday, which we see as a huge improvement. At least now everyone who wants to go on the website can, and we can all track our reading and chat in the forums without waiting 10 minutes for each page to load!

Thank you to all of the people who have sent us nice messages, we really appreciate it <3

ANOTHER UPDATE: The badges are back! Check the “Update Stats & Badges” tab on your profile!

  1. The badge aspect was just a fun way to keep track of the reading rush to make it like a game. But I still think the whole website is functional in helping me get through the reading rush!

  2. Sorry to hear about the issues the badges were causing. Maybe at a later date, something can be put in to help support the badges and all things bookish for this site <3 Keep up the great work!

  3. While I’m bummed about the badges, (having little records of achievements to strive for helps motivate me), I’m just super happy to finally be able to use the site and participate without issue. The removal of the badges made a HUGE difference for me, since prior to it I could hardly access the site at all.

  4. Technology sucks sometimes! I’m still having a blast! Maybe if you are able, posting the badges as a sheet of printables is an option, for those of us who want to add them to a notebook or bullet journal. I know I saw this suggestion on twitter already. Keep reading! πŸ˜ŽπŸ‘

    1. I think the idea of having them as printable material is AMAZING !! I would to be able to include them in my reading journal and keep track of the ones I have won. πŸ₯°πŸ€ž

  5. Ah I’m glad I saw this! I thought it was just broken for me because I thought I accidentally spammed it trying to get one and it wasn’t giving it to me!
I loved the idea of the badges; however, it’s more important to have the site function properly!!!

  6. I’ve just seen you updated the badges with just a check list in the stats! It’s easy to use and still allows us to display our badges on our profile! Thank you for working this out for us as this was one of my huge motivators (I am a badge freak) πŸ˜‰

  7. Love the badges but love that they site is working faster now.

All of you are doing a great job. Especially this being the first year for having this site. Thank you so much for allowing me to participate in this years reading rush. πŸ™‚

    1. This is what the Magic Badge said before they changed the layout: “A special badge for the founding members of the Reading Rush. If you see this badge on someones profile it means they supported the Reading Rush IndieGoGo campaign at the ‘Reading Rush Magic’ tier.”
